Overview of OTN

Old Teachers Network (OTN), a Japanese nonprofit organization was established in Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture, on September 17, 2024.
Its activities are primarily focused on the following two objectives:

  • Supporting research and educational collaboration with Vietnamese universities, mainly through retired faculty members from Japanese universities. Planned activities include organizing summer schools, visiting lectures, and related academic exchange programs.
  • Promoting cultural projects in Ishikawa Prefecture and the broader Hokuriku region. Specifically, OTN plans:
    (1) to organize regular concerts by young musicians, with the Komatsu Danjuro Art Theater Urara Small Hall envisioned as a principal venue; and
    (2) to digitize exhibition catalogues and collection catalogues of small- and medium-sized museums and art museums, limited to bibliographic and archival information such as tables of contents and collection indexes.

Regarding the first objective, OTN intends to collaborate with Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST) and the Consulate General of Vietnam in Osaka. Since around 2000, JAIST has maintained educational partnerships with institutions such as Vietnam National University, producing more than 400 master’s and doctoral graduates from Vietnam. More than half of these graduates are now active in academic institutions both within and outside Vietnam. Approximately 60 Vietnamese students are currently enrolled at JAIST each year.
For the second objective, OTN plans to gradually expand its activities beginning in fiscal year 2025, starting from the local community of Komatsu City.
